E-Bike Version 1 (2015)
E-Bike Version 1 (2015)
Info: In 2015 I made my first E-Bike. It had a total of 3 battery revisions but the motor, controller assembly were from a 3Kw Cyclone mid-drive kit.
Rev 1 Battery:
12s2p Sanyo 18650 cell battery from a couple of power drill
Rev 2 Battery:
12s2p (2x) Turnigy 6s 3.3ah LiPos from Hobbyking
Rev 3 Battery:
A custom 48v 10ah pack 13s1p 38120 Headway LiFePO4 cells.
I made mounts out of Delrin that held the battery to the frame.
Wired a BMS to take care of battery charging/discharging as well as active cell balancing.
What I learned: I primarily focused on batteries for the first time around as the kit had everything, but the battery solved. I learned about BMS's, Different battery chemistries, and building lithium battery packs from cells safely.
Above is Rev 3 battery pack and had significantly more range (about 15 miles) than both packs.
Below is Rev 2 battery pack. Was significantly faster than Rev 3 due to Lipo superior discharging characteristics. However It had terrible range and was not nearly as safe.
This was me posing with a battery pack I made out of recycled powertool 18650s from Home Depot. This was Rev 1 and had practically no range at all. I was just excited since it was free.
